NYGHT – An experimental Role Playing Game
Video games usually use keyboard, mouse or controller as input devices. The game designer needs to think of which device fits the best to control the character through the game. NYGHT uses the keyboard and game controller at the same time as a feature to enable the player to move through different dimensions of the world.
NYGHT is a demo of a third person isometric role play puzzler with the unique feature to support keyboard and controller input at the same time. In order to complete your journey and solve the riddles you will need to use both forms of input and switch between two worlds within the game.
I created following game rules for the actual game:
- Players progress through a world made of riddles.
- Each riddle need to be solved in order to proceed to the next.
- Players need to use both input devices to solve riddles.
- A riddle consists of finding something, using an interactable (switch, door, NPC), finding the correct path or a combination of all.
- During the journey players will find items to improve they character and will need to fight enemies.
- Hints will be given from NPCs that tell the story
An example of such a riddle could be that the player comes across a bridge that was destroyed during an accident a long time ago. They player will be told that story by an NPC. When changing worlds, players will notice that the bridge was still whole in the ghost world. They can pass the bridge in that world and switch back to physically manifest on the other side of the destroyed bridge in the physical world.
