Funeral Delivery Ver.01
## Abstruct
Because I can die on another land, they want me to package my father’s funeral to shame me.This is a simulation of a funeral delivery, telling the story of a group of Chinese people planning to immigrate illegally to the United States. These individuals resort to unconventional methods by first traveling to South America and then heading north across the U.S. border. They attempt to escape their current living conditions in search of a better life, but face skepticism from their fellow countrymen. Their homeland can no longer accommodate them, forcing them to take everything with them, including funerals. Part 1 only shows the route from Quito, Ecuador, to Darien, Pana.
## Background
Since 2020, the number of Chinese people attempting to illegally migrate to the United States has risen from around 1,000 each year to approximately 10,000 annually. Due to inappropriate pandemic policies and economic conditions, Chinese citizens are trying to escape this frustrating country and seek a place in the more developed United States to spend the rest of their lives in peace. Those attempting to flee are afraid to disclose their plans to those around them because it could cause unnecessary trouble, such as being summoned by the police or inciting hatred from others. In the eyes of most Chinese people, escaping is seen as a betrayal of China, which is a very shameful act. Based on the experiences shared by many who have attempted illegal migration, including videos and written accounts, any user with access to Google can find Chinese tutorials online on how to migrate from South America to the United States, greatly reducing the risks involved. Even so, these individuals still have to face threats from jungles, long treks, and local armed groups. Against this backdrop, I simulated a journey from South America to the United States by researching the most popular routes and experiences online.
## Material
In my work, I used the concept of a funeral as the main theme. I simulated the process of objects bumping in the trunk of a truck using fabric in the Unity game engine. For Chinese people, funerals are fundamental; they attach great importance to the ritual, as it symbolizes respect for their ancestors and represents the final dignity in a person’s life. When an individual’s community does not allow them to hold a funeral locally, it means they have been exiled and rejected by their community. Therefore, I chose to depict the transportation of a funeral to reflect the helplessness of illegal immigrants.
