Von Mauern und Menschen is a short documentary exploring urban change through street art, creative spaces, and community practices in George Town, Penang. Filmed between April and May, the project reflects on tourism, gentrification, and the role of art in shaping space. Through local voices and observation, the film approaches the city as a site of tension between preservation and transformation.

Von Mauern und Menschen ist ein kurzer Dokumentarfilm, der sich mit dem urbanen Wandel anhand von Straßenkunst, kreativen Räumen und Gemeinschaftspraktiken in George Town, Penang, auseinandersetzt. Das zwischen April und Mai gedrehte Projekt reflektiert über Tourismus, Gentrifizierung und die Rolle der Kunst bei der Gestaltung von Raum. Durch lokale Stimmen und Beobachtungen nähert sich der Film der Stadt als einem Ort der Spannung zwischen Bewahrung und Transformation.

As part of the project, a zine was created and distributed at the screening. It served as a supplement and a space for reflection: terms were explained, questions explored in depth, and the film contextualized. The zine was deliberately intended as a souvenir—something that viewers could take home and continue to think about.
Als Teil des Projekts entstand ein Zine, das beim Screening ausgelegt wurde. Es diente als Beiheft und Denkraum: Begriffe wurden erklärt, Fragen vertieft und der Film kontextualisiert. Das Zine war bewusst als Souvenir gedacht – etwas, das die Zuschauenden mitnehmen und weiterdenken können.

Formally, the film works with a combination of documentary material, projections, archive images, and street art. The superimposition of body, image, and space reflects the complexity of the topics addressed and makes the filmmaker’s own position visible without placing it at the center of attention.
Formal arbeitet der Film mit einer Kombination aus Dokumentarmaterial, Projektionen, Archivbildern und Street Art. Die Überlagerung von Körper, Bild und Raum spiegelt die Komplexität der behandelten Themen wider und macht die eigene Position des Filmemachers sichtbar, ohne sie in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen.
