tales of an egg world
‘tales of an egg world’ consists of four pieces made in different media about an egg world.
Eggs are often used as symbols of growth and new lives. They represent a child, a talent, or an idea that changes form later in life, with the image of an egg hatching a baby chick, and later becoming a chicken. However, the eggs we see in our daily lives are mostly unfertilized which won’t hatch.
Eggs are commonplace in supermarkets in our modern setting. The production and distribution of eggs are realised in a very systematic way as if the physical function of hens’ ovulation exists to feed other species. This is a peculiar scenery.
As they don’t have following vital steps (hatching/growing), they are considered by us humans to be fated to be eaten. What does this mean for them? What does it mean to be eaten? Is it their death, or something else? How do they interpret life and death? What would be the meaning of life for eggs?
To explore their concept of life, I have attempted to depict the egg world through multiple lenses: installation, drawing, sculpture, and animation.

‘egg forest’ is an installation of plaster eggs, 112 in the air and 100 on the ground. The eggs on the ground, coloured in different grey patterns, are static. On the other hand, the eggs in the air sway and are free. Yet at the same time, they are unstable and collide with each other. Each egg has different thinness, some make a sound like a wind chime, while others make disturbing cracking sounds.

‘egg lore’ is a set of sketches of scenes passed down amongst the eggs. The meeting of the two hens, the birth of the first egg, the gathering under the full moon, the egg sacrificed in a ritual, etc.

‘Mutterhuhn and the son’ is about the chickenization of myself during the production of ‘egg forest’, in which I take out eggs from egg moulds every morning. The bronze sculptures ‘the egg’ and ‘the egg (cracked)’ are a tool for egg ritual and a symbol of a sacrificial egg.

‘egg war (the opening)’ is the beginning of a continuous animation project. The opening shows how eggs as a species start to confront human society and the difficulties and struggles to come.
