Egg War – Animation Performance

Welcome to Yamanote, where Bremen’s charm meets Tokyo’s urban bustle! Eggs are sentient and live among humans, but as children of chickens they are treated as second-class citizens. The Eggs are rallying for more rights and even autonomy… The Egg Rights Movement is in full swing!

Egg War – Animation Performance is a queer-feministic show that leverages musical and comedy elements to address the struggles and absurd challenges faced by migrants and queers in contemporary society.

Momo is the first humanised egg. He was raised captive in a laboratory until his liberation by members of the Yamanote Egg Party, an interim government of eggs. Momo’s backstory inspires eggkind and he becomes a pivotal figure in the Egg Rights Movement. When the party meets his former captors, they learn the origins of humanised egg creation: a process mired in immigrant trauma and queer yearning.

The performance follows the journey of how the humanized eggs gain social and political power and suggests unique ways to navigate the minority experience. Using eggs as symbols of both fragility and new life, the play explores themes of power deconstruction, activism and sexual desire. The combination of animation and live performance pushes boundaries of stage art and redefines performativity.

The critical parts of the story are communicated via classical music and vocal performance. The story’s action mirrors the structure of the music: events and character dialogue occur alongside melody and tempo changes, thereby emphasizing the situational absurdity and emotional state of the characters. This creative process explores the core themes of the story, such as the hypocrisy of human society, exclusion, discrimination and the oppression of minorities.

Unlike traditional film media, the show is developed dynamically and has flexibility to include site-specific elements and current events. This version included the real-life construction of a bus stop by HfK Bremen which impedes the egg party’s travel to Uni Bremen, and the eggs’ discussions concerning the nationwide silence over the ongoing genocide in Palestine.
