AI STEREOTYP

An Investigation of the possibility to generate racist stereotypical Content in AI. I researched, analyzed different Ais, and summarized them in a Table. In my Project I use only DALLE2, Craiyon and DiffusionBee

AI should be a term for everyone who deals with technologies. With a few prompts you can easily generate thoughts. A tool to visualize thoughts. But what about when we want to generate racist content? It started when I had a conversation with a fellow student. It was about the racist stereotypes in Malaysia. The University of Arts is an international university, where most of the students are from abroad. My classmate asked me, what are the racist stereotypes in Germany? I said that the most common racist stereotype is young men with foreign nationality, who drive expensive cars. I wanted to show him a visual example and came up with the idea of using Dalle2 to generate an image.

Since I used a German context in the description, the results were amazing to me. I did not expect such accurate images to be generated. The images could well come from the gossip press, which often use such cover images. But I was more interested in which keywords generate such images. My current word combination contained words that provoke racist and aggressive images. I asked myself which images are generated when I use neutral words. According to my feelings, the most descriptions of migrants in Germany are negative connotations. Therefore, I am comparing the stereotypes here. In this case in a German context. Migrant milieus are compared with the majority of society. Because with the same prompts, completely different images are generated. In most cases, the migrant perspective generates a stereotypical to racist image.

For the exhibition, it was important for me to decide which pictures I wanted to present. It is important to bring hard contrasts to the fore. Because it is a matter of transferring a circumstance to the viewers. Which is often devalued only as a feeling or exaggeration. Therefore, directness and posterity are very important to me in the exhibition. The human psyche tends to evaluate grievances that do not affect us as no problem. While the same circumstance for the affected people is usually very stressful. Thats why it is so important to compare nationalities and cultures in this project. To make clear to both sides that they are presented like stereotypes. Because not only minorities, also the majority society in this case the Germans. They are often portrayed only as blond and blue-eyed caricatures. But only by comparison, I can make recognizable how strong the stereotypes are in migrant prompts. Because many could also argue that the images are normal. That is why comparison is so important. Because as you will see in a moment, with the same term, the German family is shown a completely perfect world. But by the Arab family, Ai generates extremely Racist images.

I intended to invite people to interpret my project. The feelings and the interpretation of the guests are usually much more interesting than the actual meaning of the work. Thereby completely different points of view come into the light. Which one does not recognize as a developer. Because as an artist you are in a tunnel vision in the progress and define the work completely yourself. The most important aspect of my work is the dialogue. Because within my exhibition, I observe the visitors. They discussed and interpreted completely different approaches to my work. Some saw stories in it. Oher guests looked at the images in a different order. At some point in this process, I intervened with the visitors and explained what my work actually represented. As a result, many interesting dialogues took place, through which I also learned a lot about myself. Because many of the conversations help in art projects to find a definition to one’s work. You also learn a lot about yourself in such processes. At the end of the day, the images are actually a mirror of society. AI only generates what we humans search for and post or upload. Even if we like to tend to such projects, to point the finger at others. Should my project actually point the finger at ourselves. Because we all know these images. Or had in times of populism such images in our head. Therefore, I put the lighting extra Frontal opposite of project, so that the shadow of the guests shines on the images. A symbolism for the fact that we ourselves are a part of these images. My project is a critical examination of our society. In my opinion, such problems are often romanticized through rose-colored glasses. Therefore, I am always looking for ways to create art projects to show the ills, especially in Germany. AI is a good way here, because it can show very directly how interpretive sovereignty is in a country. Maybe we can use AIs in the future to explore how a country thinks or feels.
