States of Tension
States of Tension offers a visual and material exploration of tension as a constant and inherent condition of both physical and perceptual systems. Through a TPU sheet subjected to mechanical forces and revealed using a system of polarized filters, the internal distribution of stress within the material becomes visible.
My personal involvement is embedded in the material itself. By manually stretching the sheet, I infuse it with a trace of my own tension, transforming the work from a mere display of physical stress into a visual narrative of personal experience.
Tension is neither a static state nor an isolated entity; it is a dynamic force in constant fluctuation. It not only manifests in the deformation of a body under stress but also permeates our biological and emotional structures, regulating the balance between order and chaos.
This system explores how tension, in its varying intensities, can generate organized structures or induce destabilization. An increase in tension may foster cohesion and order, while its reduction tends toward disorder. Yet, excessive tension can lead to collapse, just as its complete absence may cause disintegration.
States of Tension invites reflection on the interplay between stability and instability, revealing tension as a fundamental principle in the formation of shapes, structures, and our perceptions.
