Intimacy of Strangers: The Kinetic Mycelium

Intimacy of Strangers: The Kinetic Mycelium is a work about imaginary fungal organisms, as the composite life-forms of symbiotic partnerships, move with their interconnected limbs in order to encompass a greater landscape around them. The work aims to create hypothetical fungal organisms that embody the pervasive nature of symbiotic relationships among all living entities. It seeks to envision the thought patterns, behaviors, and communication methods of micro-organisms.

Drawing inspiration from the work of the evolutionary biologist, Lynn Margulis and her concept of “the long lasting intimacy of strangers,” the project works with the world of fungi, slime molds, and microorganisms to reimagine the boundaries of life itself. The work serves as a metaphor for the hybrid life-forms that emerge from symbiotic partnerships, embodying the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
